Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Sue Gouse has moved frequently throughout the United States and has also
lived in Mexico City. She received her BSN at Duke University School of Nursing in 1971, followed by an active
clinical nursing career. She is married to Dr. John Gouse, a radiologist, and has raised five children. She is the
proud grandmother of two boys and one girl. The members of her family provide constant inspiration for Sue’s
work.
Sue now lives in Savannah, Georgia in the historic home she and her husband renovated in 2000. The family
spends extended time on Tybee Island during the summer, in addition to enjoying time in the beautiful mountains
of North Carolina.
Throughout her life, Sue has been interested in much creative activity. Her love of beauty, color, texture,
space, detail, variety, and light in God’s world has delighted and fascinated her. Consequently, she has been
involved in home decorating, gardening, stained glass, heirloom sewing, needlepoint, crewel, scrap booking,
photography, and various other arts and crafts. Several of her homes have been on house and garden tours, and
her home in Savannah has been in the September, 2005 issue of Better Homes and Gardens and in The Savannah
Magazine. She loves outside sports activities such as jogging, tennis and golf.
All of this amateur activity, along with her life experiences, has culminated in a love of painting, discovered
fairly late in life. Sue has always appreciated those who could paint, but never felt capable of drawing or painting
until she walked into The Blue Valley Gallery in North Carolina to take her first art lesson from the owner, Velda
Lovell. Velda and her husband, Dennis, have been most instrumental in making Sue’s desire to paint a reality.
She has also gleaned advice from Marcos Blahove, a gracious friend and neighbor at Tybee who is a world
famous artist. Her reprographic artist, Theresa, of TFM Productions has been an invaluable source of information
and encouragement. Sue’s husband, John, has been her strongest admirer and consistent supporter. Sue
especially thanks God for His gifts of grace and love which allow her to paint.
Sue is the cover artist for the
September 2006 Laurel magazine in Highlands, North Carolina, and her work is
shown and sold at The Blue Valley Gallery in Cashiers, North Carolina. Her work is also sold at the Horne and
Thistle Gallery, Soho South Café and Gallery, and Trends and Traditions in Savannah, Georgia; Cindy’s Custom
Framing & Antique Art in Richmond Hill, Georgia; and the Gallery by the Sea at Tybee Island, Georgia. She was
awarded an honorable mention ribbon at a juried show at the Savannah Garden Exposition 2006, and has been
juried into several fine art shows.
